A Note from the Director:

Our program continuously evolves. This page will keep you current with  our dynamic internship. You can become acquainted with our current interns or Kelley Martin, the Program Director. You can also read our latest semi-annual newsletter.

Mark your calendar upcoming dates and events.  Our Open House is scheduled December 18, 2009 to allow interested students to learn about our program, tour the area, and meet our preceptors and interns.

Highlights and Accomplishments of the 2009 Intern Class:

This class is graduating June 26th, 2009 and will soon take the Registered Dietitian board exam.  They were an excellent class who dedicated 10 months (unpaid, full-time) to complete over 25 rotations at MUSC and the community, 11 group and individual projects (some listed above), and over 130 hours of classroom curriculum.

In this service-learning program, the interns prepare for their professional development.   Through MUSC's committment to interprofessional student learning through service to the community, interns worked with other MUSC students on many projects and rotations to "give back" to MUSC and the local area.  Some of their work included:

  1. Implementing an MUSC employee wellness contest
  2. Revising the MUSC renal menu
  3. Presenting health fairs and public speaking events
  4. Publishing nutrition "hot topics" articles in the MUSC Catalyst
  5. Conducting real research projects with MUSC RDs, resulting in abstracts and poster presentations
  6. Presenting real-patient "case studies" to professional RD staff
  7. Working on projects with the Low County Food Bank and public schools
  8. Developing a legislative platfrom by writing their state congress representative on nutrition-related legislation
  9. Filming cooking demonstration videos for MUSC bariatric surgery patients
  10. Analyzing recipes for an MUSC-published heart healthy cookbook, called The ART of Healthy Cooking (in stores soon!)

As the Director, I am so proud of them!  Read about their future plans, as I know they will be successful!
