Class of 2010-2011 Highlights

The first class of 10 interns graduated June 4, 2011 and ALL PASSED THE RD EXAM!

They dedicated 10 months to complete over 25 rotations  at MUSC and the community, 10 major group and individual projects (highlights of some listed below), and over 130 hours of classroom curriculum. They prepared for their professional development while also "giving back"  via the following learning activities:

1.   Taught nutrition workshops to parent & children of low-income public schools through MUSC's Junior Doctors of Health program©. Interns also promoted wellness and obesity prevention campaigns through MUSC's Lean Team program.

2.  Coached participants towards healthy weight loss through the MUSC Wellness Center's Healthy Charleston Challenge Program.

3.  Analyzed SC public school menus and modified as needed  to comply with national USDA standards.  Results were utilized by the SC Department of Education, Office of Nutrition.

4.  Implemented several National Nutrition Month/RD Appreciation Day® activities for MUSC RD preceptors.

5.  Produced a video on "Becoming a Dietitian" used for the MUSC DI website and the MUSC Nutrition Services website (stay tuned for posting!).

6.  Developed patient education materials for MUSC's C.A.R.E.S. program, a free medical clinic for the under/uninsured.

7. Conducted individual research and disseminated their results via abstracts and posters. Three interns were able to present their posters at the SC Dietetic Association annual Spring meeting in Greenville, SC.

8.  Developed legislative platforms by writing letters to their state congress representative on nutrition-related bills up for vote. 

9. Published nutrition "hot topic" articles in the MUSC Catalyst on a variety of subjects.
 
10. Presented individual patient case studies and research article critiques to professional RD audiences.
 
11.  Presented at over 15 different health fairs and public speaking events to lay audiences.  

12.  Participated in the Charleston Area Children's Garden Project and by teaching inner-city elementary school children the benefits of good health and nutrition through garden activities.  Interns also received a series of workshops on gardening and sustainibility through Clemson Extension.

13.  Attended field trips to locations such as an organic farm, Meal-On-Wheels, the Low Country Food Bank, MUSC's human performance laboratoryLouie's Kids, and the Channel 2 news studio!

14.  Four interns spent their 2-week elective in Guatamala providing nutritional support to malnourished children and developing nutrition education  programs and through a medical mission trip.  They also refined their medical spanish-speaking skills!

15.  Marketed a fundraiser by designing and selling coffee mugs.  They raised close to $1000 allowing them to attend the SC Dietetic Association annual spring meeting.

16.  Worked with special populations such as high-risk pregnant teenagers at the Florence Crittenton House, chefs at the Trident Technical College's Culinary Institute, sick infants/children/adults in intensive care units, geriatric patients in nursing facilities and dialysis clinics, ambulatory patients in outpatient clinics, children/teachers/administrators in school and garden settings, and WIC recipients in health departments!

17. Created, costed, and tested new recipes of international themes during their culinary and hospital foodservice rotations.

18.  Brittany Chin was awarded the Charleston Trident Dietetic Association AND the SC Dietetic Association Dietetic Student of the Year!
