Medical Social Workers

Social Workers at MUSC have a Masters degree in Social Work (MSW) and a current South Carolina Social Work License.

Social Workers provide services that support the needs of our patients and their families. In addition, Social Workers at MUSC are involved in training students and hospital staff and are on hospital committees and task forces, which help to improve patient care. Social Workers are available for each hospital unit.

Some things Social Workers can help with:

  • Assessment of family's needs
  • Limited or poor coping skills
  • Limited or no family support
  • Emotional needs
  • Crisis intervention
  • Grief/bereavement counseling
  • Supportive counseling
  • Adjustment to new illness/treatment
  • Patient and family conferences
  • Drug/alcohol use or abuse
  • Domestic violence, child and adult abuse and neglect, physical assaults, rape or other sexual assaults
  • Information and referral to community services and agencies
  • Financial counseling
  • Discharge needs
  • Legal needs
  • Adoptions
